HOUSTON -- It is time to honor our best and brightest students with scholarships for the upcoming semester! The Houston Association of Black Journalists will be honoring students in the journalism / communication / public relations fields who are either from Houston and attending college / university elsewhere, or are attending Houston area college / university.

*** Scholarships will be $2,500 each ***

~~To qualify for the scholarship, applicants should mail an official college transcript, two letters of recommendation and a two page (double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font) essay to:

Essay topic: The global pandemic has changed the way journalists today are covering and delivering news. Do you feel that the shift has forced us to be more creative, more responsible, and will require an enhanced skillset? How do you envision the next generation of journalism?

Other Criteria:

•Must be a graduating high school senior with proof of enrollment in upcoming 2020 Fall semester at college or university, or a current full-time college student (undergraduate or graduate) and registered (a minimum of 12 hours) for the upcoming Fall semester.


•Must be from the Greater Houston area or attending college or graduate school in the Greater Houston area.


•Must be majoring in a journalism-related field, including print, radio or broadcast, mass communications or public relations.


•Must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA


•Must have two letters of recommendation from professors, internship coordinators, employers, pastors, community leaders, etc.


•The aforementioned essay must be no less than 500-words in 12-point Times New Roman font and double-spaced


•Must submit official undergraduate or graduate transcript


•Must submit resume


•Submit cover letter.  List any special circumstances that make you deserving of this scholarship (i.e. hardships, first generation, etc.)


•Mail all scholarship material to the HABJ Post Office Box (address above)


•Deadline: Due to COVID-19, submission of applications has been extended to June 26.
