HABJ packs the house for Brand You! workshop

HOUSTON -- The Houston Association of Black Journalists hosted Brand YOU! on Saturday, August 30 near the city's downtown district. The interactive, information filled session was attended by HABJ members and members of the general public seeking business tips on branding basics and how to step outside their comfort zones.

Panelists included Alexis Herron, producer at KHOU 11's "Great Day Houston" and Vicky Pink Heileman, owner of VP Productions -- both HABJ Board members -- in addition to Alexandria Green, owner of Booked Design Space and Ja'Leah Davis, CEO of EyeConic Television.

From college students to seasoned professionals, the audience listened in, asked questions and more importantly, shared their thoughts on driving businesses, brands and best practices.

The session was moderated by HABJ Parliamentarian Vannessa Wade, owner of Connect the Dots PR.

From posting with a purpose to taking quality headshots, no stone was left unturned. Key takeaways included:

1. Network in person. People often rely on social media. Be sure to have a website, follow up and keep focused.

2. Post with purpose. What impression do you want to leave?

3. Landing a job in media can be challenging and students can get a head start by volunteering, seeking mentorships and by creating their own brand by posting online or building a website. Just start.

4. Headshots are a staple in the business world and there are elements in which people should be aware of. Be sure to have proper lighting, smile and be professional. Selfies are not headshots.
