GET HIRED at the #NABJ17 Convention and Career Fair
NEW ORLEANS - NABJ understands the importance of making the most of your job search, especially when the media landscape is continually evolving. Ahead of this year's National Association of Black Journalists convention in New Orleans, here are five tips to help you maximize your search:
1. Create a portfolio website. In addition to a hard copy of your one-page resume, you need to be able to send potential employers to one place that shows to house your work and your resume. For some tips on how to create an online portfolio site, check out this webinar from NABJ member Marissa Evans. (from the NABJ Digital Blog)
2. Don't overlook your own network. It may be tempting to limit your search to job boards and recruiters you find on LinkedIn, but don't forget the power of your current network. By getting in touch (ideally, keeping in touch) with past colleagues, classmates, family friends, etc. you can open doors to opportunity you may not have previously considered.
3. Prepare for the Career Fair. The exhibitors and booth numbers for this year's Career Fair have already been posted on the convention website (available here). Make the most of your time at the fair by developing a plan of attack ahead of time and devising a strategy to connect with your target employers.
4. Cover your bases if you're a first timer. For those first-time job seekers, check out this blog post for some great tips from former NABJ President Bob Butler.
5. Give exhibitors advanced access to your resume. Instead of waiting until you get to the convention to share your resume, you can upload it now to the official NABJ Career Center website and win a free convention registration! By uploading now, exhibitors can access your resume before, during, and after the convention. Click here to upload it now and enter to win a complimentary registration.
We hope to see you at this year's NABJ Convention Career Fair, taking place from August 9 - 13 at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel!
